David and his brother, John, served during theWar of 1812 in Captain
John Galt's Frederick County Militia. The War of1812was often called
(The Second War of Independence". The Frederick County militia formed on
August 31, 1814, immediately after the burning of Washington D.C. by te
British.. David and John
served at Hampstead Hill, east of Baltimore. Their unit threw up
entrenchments to protect Baltimore from attach from the strongest nation
in the world at that time. It was estimated that 15,000 meand and 120
canons protected this position. From Hampstead Hill, the bombardment of
Fort MCHenry could be heard on September 13th and 14th. Fortunately,
David and John did not have to
experience any direct actgion as the blockade on the Cheasapeake
prevented any British ships from bombing Hampstead.
Sothe Zumbrun's were there at pivotal times in the early beginnings of
this Nation's history. David's father Johounn, during the American
Revolution and
as passed down in family folklore, was a German Hessian Mercenary. We
knowof seven (7) Zumbrun's in the Civil War. One was David's son John
who
diedin the War from illness, and three others that were his
grandchildren. A cousin, Thomas Zumbrun, died in Andersonville from
cruel and inhumane treatment.
